Sierra Road Mud
In the 1980s I owned a small
house in a remote part of the
foothills of the Sierra Nevadas
of California. What follows are
figures formed from the mud I
collected from the side of the
dirt road to my place. Later I
cooked them in a hot manzanita
pit fire. Several decades later,
in another part of California,
I glued these figures to various
chunks of wood and sometimes
named them. Many suffered
from a nasty raccoon/cat battle,
so I glued the damaged fragile
objects back together and then
photgraphed them for this site.
In my making art for 57 years,
these objects are some of my
favorite pieces of art. Here, I
show them, dust and dirt and
glue, in all their ceramic glory.
That good old California dirt
I still love for what
she shows me.
